Mortenson's Zero Injury culture underpins a drive to build a better world and achieve great things with each project. It runs through everything they do and everybody who does it––from construction crews all the way up to the CEO. It’s a deep commitment shared and supported by dedicated partners like Ergodyne through innovative PPE, field training and four decades of experience helping crews navigate the hazards inherent to the work.
These workers are some of the best employees I've ever met. When you do this, you spend more time with your coworkers than you do with your own family. We've got combines, we've got all the harvesting going on. Believe me, when I say I'm going to be out there looking out for them. So please take a look at where you have stored energy out there and make sure you're making the right decisions to make sure you do not get hurt. In my role as director of safety, tenacity is always pursuing zero injuries and zero safety events on a project. Some of the biggest challenges we face day to day here are Mother Nature. We're building a wind farm, but we need the wind to be down low enough where we can actually erect the components. Anything that we cannot control introduces a very concerning variable to our work. It's a windy area, so we've got a fine balance that we have to play there. So making sure we're making the right decision and not putting people in harm's way is really the biggest thing we can do to battle that. It's heavy industrial, you know, you can get hurt at a blink of an eye. We want to make sure that all of our guys have all the appropriate PPE for their jobs. So this is an 80 pound lanyard that attaches to a railing or structure. We're going to want to be back a little bit because of that blade coming in when those blades come into the hub. There are a lot of studs that need to connect perfectly. If it gets too close, then you can absolutely get seriously hurt. And as long as we follow these policies and procedures that we put in place, we can also have fun doing it. This project is helping create a better world by providing green energy to thousands of homes in the state of Iowa. It's very satisfying to just see that landscape evolve. It's a great feeling knowing that making everything cleaner for our future generations.
