It’s a little hard to admit, but this iconic symbol of worker safety has room for improvement.
The traditional hard hat design actually does what it was designed to do really well, and that’s preventing head injuries from objects striking workers directly—linear impacts. What it doesn’t account for as well are glancing blows or angled impacts. Put another way, many of the impacts that actually occur on a worksite.
But for more than a century, hard hats have failed to address that danger.
The MIPS® system adds an important and completely unobtrusive layer of rotational protection to our safety helmets. Addressing the threat of rotational energy may prevent untold amounts of previously unaddressed head injuries.
It just might be the biggest advancement in head protection since the invention of hard hats themselves.
